Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb has earned its special privileges.
YORKSHIRE Forced Rhubarb joined the ranks of Champagne and Parma Ham today, as it was added to the list of Europe's specially-protected food and drink.
The humble vegetable, grown and harvested in an area in northern England affectionately known as the ‘rhubarb triangle,’ was awarded the prestigious Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the European Commission’s Protected Food Name scheme.
Wow, these people really take this stuff seriously.
In the same way that only sparkling wine from the Champagne region can be honored with the Champagne label, if it is not Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb, it is just plain rhubarb.
Rhubarb lovers rejoiced like only they can.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn expressed his delight at the news, saying, “Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb has been recognized thanks to the quality of this traditionally grown product and the enthusiasm and commitment shown by all involved".
Janet Oldroyd of the Yorkshire Rhubarb Growers Association said the PDO status was “fantastic news”.
